It’s a Derby Thing

Saturday, April 18th, 2009

Today marks the start of the two week long Derby Festival, which leads right up to the Run for the Roses, or as most seem know it, the Kentucky Derby.  These two weeks leading up to the first leg of the Triple Crown, are the highlight of living in Louisville.  There are tons to see and do during this time and honestly, Derby season will be the only thing I miss about this city once I leave it.  If I return just for this one particular time of the year, it will be enough to give me a taste of home.

Thunder Over Louisville (which takes place downtown on the waterfront) marks the beginning of the two weeks.  It is preceeded by a fabulous air show up until it gets dark.  About 10 pm-ish, is when the fun really begins! If you’ve never been to a big fireworks show, you must come to Louisville for this event!  I’ve yet to really see anything top this production my city and state proudly put on each April.

This is just something I get excited about each and every year… my absolute favorite part about living in Kentucky is all about two weeks leading up to a 2 1/2 minute horse race.  You’ve gotta love the South!
